Beer of the Day: Timothy Taylor’s Landlord

What do our Ale Trailers and James Blunt have in common? Excellent taste in cask, apparently.

Every year we ask our Ale Trailers to vote for their favourite beer – and every year Timothy Taylor’s Landlord comes out on top. So there really could only be one Drinkers’ Choice Beer of the Day to kick off Cask Ale Week. And this year our drinkers have some rather famous company. Singer, songwriter, cask ale fan and – importantly – pub owner James Blunt has picked Landlord as his Beer of the Day too.

Why? James tells us: “The beer is always consistent and has beautiful clarity once settled. Coming in at a sensible 4.3% ABV means enjoying a few jars is no problem at all… There would be uproar if we ever considered removing it from our pumps!” And who are we to argue? First brewed in 1953, Landlord has gone on to become a four-time CAMRA Supreme Champion Beer of Britain and today is Britain’s number-one cask ale by both volume and value. Bright, beautifully balanced, fruity and citrusy with that unmistakable lingering bitter finish, this is a pint that inspires some serious loyalty.

And if your usual Landlord looks particularly snazzy this Cask Ale Week, you haven’t had one too many. Timothy Taylor’s has just unveiled its first major brand refresh in more than a decade, with a smart new British racing green look rolling out across pump clips, glassware and bottles. New outfit, same Landlord underneath – which is probably just as well, given James has already warned us what would happen if anyone messed with it.
