SUMMARY:Brewery of the Day: Belhaven
DESCRIPTION:Sitting among the barley fields of East Lothian\, just outside Dunbar\, Scotland’s oldest working brewery has been doing its thing since 1719. More than 300 years later\, the beer is still brewed right there using local water\, malted barley and Belhaven’s own yeast. There are even ancient cellars on the site linked to the Benedictine monks who brewed in Dunbar centuries ago. That’s a fair bit of brewing history beneath your feet before you’ve even ordered a pint. \nAnd what we love about Belhaven is that its beers are so unmistakably Scottish. This is the land of 80 Shilling – or “80 bob” if you prefer – alongside stouts\, IPAs and the hugely popular Belhaven Best. There’s a brilliant sense of place about it all: a brewery on the Scottish coast\, surrounded by some of the country’s finest barley-growing land\, still producing beers with the malty\, characterful flavours generations of Scottish drinkers have enjoyed. Yet there’s plenty for a new generation to discover too. \nBetter still\, Belhaven is getting properly stuck into Cask Ale Week\, with participating pubs offering CAMRA members 25% off cask during the promotion. So whether you already know your 80/- from your Wee Heavy or the world of Scottish ale is completely new territory\, this seems a very good week to investigate. Find a handpull\, order yourself a pint and raise a glass to more than three centuries of Scottish brewing. SUMMARY:Beer of the Day: Colchester Brewery Brazilian Coffee Vanilla Porter
DESCRIPTION:What beer does the Chairman of CAMRA go hunting for when he spots it on the bar? Today we have the answer – and apparently you need to be quick. \nOur Beer of the Day has been chosen by Ash Corbett-Collins\, Chairman of CAMRA\, and it’s Brazilian Coffee & Vanilla Porter from Colchester Brewery. Ash first discovered it at the Great British Beer Festival while volunteering as a Champion Beer of Britain judge. It was his beer of the festival and he’s been seeking it out ever since – although finding it isn’t always easy. In fact\, Ash has previously called Brazilian his “needle in a haystack beer”. When he does find it\, he knows exactly why he keeps coming back: “It is smooth with a velvety mouthfeel\, it has a strong coffee flavour without being overly bitter\, while being easily drinkable without being too heavy.” \nAt 4.6%\, Brazilian is a proper flavour-packed cask porter\, with coffee and vanilla doing the talking while Goldings and Fuggles bring some classic British brewing character underneath. And Ash isn’t the only one who rates it: Brazilian has picked up multiple awards\, including winning the Speciality category at CAMRA’s Champion Beer of Britain. Colchester Brewery says it’s regularly one of the first beers to disappear at festivals too – so perhaps Ash’s trouble finding a pint is partly because everybody else keeps beating him to it. \nThere is one catch: Brazilian isn’t brewed on cask all year round. It’s part of Colchester Brewery’s rotating dark beer range\, making finding that 4.6% cask version all the more satisfying. So if you ever spot Brazilian on a handpull\, take Ash’s advice and give it a try while you can. And if Ash happens to be standing behind you in the queue… perhaps leave him a pint.

SUMMARY:Brewery of the Day: Thwaites
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Thwaites. The family has been brewing in Lancashire since 1807 and\, six generations later\, they’re still at it – although these days the beer comes from a smaller\, modern brewery at Mellor Brook in the beautiful Ribble Valley. \nAnd small really is part of the appeal. Thwaites made a conscious move away from big industrial brewing and back towards doing things on a more human scale. The brewers describe using their senses to guide every brew from grist to cask\, producing the bitters and ales drinkers know and love alongside a rolling line-up of seasonal and small-batch cask beers. In other words\, there’s usually a very good reason to have a look along the handpulls and see what they’ve been up to. \nThat feels like a pretty good way to round off our Brewery of the Day celebrations. More than 200 years of family brewing\, proper Lancashire pubs\, a modern little brewery making cask with plenty of character – and four enormous horses keeping an eye on proceedings. If you spot Thwaites on the bar this Cask Ale Week\, give it a try. You may just find a new favourite. SUMMARY:Beer of the Day: Butcombe + Hawkstone Hops & Glory
DESCRIPTION:Well\, this feels like a rather good way to finish. Hawkstone has made its first-ever cask beer – and our final Beer of the Day comes from a landlord who knows a thing or two about a great pint. \nOwain Jones\, co-owner of The Plough at West Hanney\, has chosen Hops & Glory\, the new 4.2% Real English Pale Ale from Hawkstone and Butcombe. Owain and his team run a community-owned village pub where cask is very much part of the furniture – The Plough has been recognised repeatedly by its local CAMRA branch and has built a reputation for keeping a cracking pint. So when something genuinely new arrives on the handpull\, he’s exactly the sort of person we want to hear from. \nAnd Hops & Glory really is new territory. This is Hawkstone’s first-ever cask beer. The Cotswolds brewery has made its name with lager and modern British beer\, with Jeremy Clarkson perhaps its most recognisable champion\, but for its first trip onto the handpull it has teamed up with a brewery that knows cask inside out. Butcombe has been brewing since 1978\, giving the collaboration almost half a century of cask experience to draw upon. It’s a meeting of two different generations of British brewing – and rather wonderfully\, they’ve chosen to do it with a beer that puts British ingredients front and centre. \nHops & Glory is brewed using 100% British ingredients\, including Maris Otter barley and six varieties of British-grown hops. The result is pale\, bright and refreshing\, with grapefruit\, orange peel and gentle tropical fruit before a crisp\, satisfyingly bitter finish. It’s traditional enough to feel completely at home on a handpull\, but with the bright\, punchy hop character you’d expect from a modern pale ale. A first cask beer that actually feels like a first cask beer – not an imitation of something that came before. \nThere’s another reason we love this collaboration. Every cask sold raises £10 for two charities supporting the people at the heart of British pubs and farming. The Licensed Trade Charity has been helping people working in pubs\, bars and hospitality for more than 200 years\, providing practical\, emotional and financial support when times get difficult. Shout provides free\, confidential mental-health support by text\, including vital support for people in farming communities. Behind every pint are growers\, brewers\, dray teams\, cellar staff and publicans – real people – so it feels particularly fitting that Hawkstone and Butcombe are using their first cask together to give something back. \nAnd perhaps that’s why this makes such a good final Beer of the Day for Cask Ale Week. We’ve spent the week celebrating beers with decades – sometimes centuries – of history behind them. Hops & Glory points in the other direction. It’s a brand making its first move into cask\, working with an experienced cask brewer\, using British-grown ingredients\, supporting pubs and farming\, and putting something genuinely new on the handpull. \nSo if you spot Hops & Glory on the bar\, follow Owain’s lead and order one while you can – it’s only around for a limited time. Hawkstone’s first cask. Two breweries. Six British hops. Two brilliant causes. One community pub landlord giving it the thumbs-up.
