SUMMARY:White Rat by Ossett Brewery
DESCRIPTION:Our first Beer of the Day for Cask Ale Week 2024 is White Rat by Ossett Brewery and has been chosen by Cask Marque Marque Assessor\, Martin Hilton. \nMartin Says: “I think it’s a great beer\, a white hazy pale cask ale that based upon my assessments over the year seems to be really consistent in flavour\, really respected by landlords and really cherished by pub goers”. \nOssett’s Head Brewer has shared some interesting facts about White Rat \n\nThis very pale\, hoppy ale is made from low colour malt. A combination of Cascade\, Columbus and Amarillo hops produce an intensely aromatic and resinous finish.\nWhite Rat was first brewed in September 2011. After a test brew (Lab Rat)\, White Rat was the first beer brewed at the Rat Brewery in Huddersfield\, and was designed specifically to match the drinking preferences of the regulars in the pub.\nOriginally the beer was brewed with Cascade and Amarillo\, and a smidgen of Admiral for bitterness\, but in 2012 when the it was just starting to build a reputation there was a shortage of some US varieties – including Amarillo! To flesh out what Amarillo we had\, we substituted in some Columbus and the recipe has remained the same to this day.\nIt was brewed as a tribute to some of the classic American pales\, with it’s high bitterness and intense citrus aroma\, and for some it was seen as a little extreme back in the day. However\, as tastes have evolved it has become a firm favourite.\nOriginally one brew of twenty casks was brewed each week\, but as its popularity grew that became two and soon four. To meet demand\, production moved to the larger brewery at Ossett and became an Ossett branded beer in 2020.

As the reputation of Bowland Brewery cask and bottled beers spread\, demand increased from further afield requiring a relocation to larger premises at Holmes Mill in 2015. \n\nThe brewery is visible through large floor to ceiling glass windows at the back of Bowland Beer Hall\, our award-winning tap house which boasts one of the longest bars in the UK with 42 cask hand pull ales \nThis month we celebrate 10 years since joining the James’ Places family. DESCRIPTION:Our 7th Brewery of the Day for National Cask Ale Week 2024 is Palmers Brewery.\n\n\n\nPalmers Brewery‘s ales are brewed in one of Britain’s oldest and prettiest breweries and have been since 1794. The only thatched brewery in the UK\, Palmers sits adjacent to the river Brit just a mile from Dorset’s Jurassic Coast. All their fine ales are brewed using water from their own naturally rising spring.\n\n\n\nTheir Head Brewer uses only the finest Maris Otter malt and carefully selected whole leaf hops to produce ales in a way they have been made for generations. The Palmers historic brewhouse has a traditional mash tun\, an open top copper\, along with top fermentation\, this is the way ale should be brewed.\n\n\n\nThis year\, Palmers Brewery celebrated 230 years of brewing in Bridport. Some things never change at Arkell’s\, but it is the ability to change effectively when change is necessary that has been at the cornerstone of the brewery’s success story over the last 180 years.

DESCRIPTION:There aren’t many breweries that can look back on more than 165 years of history and still feel like they’re moving forward. Timothy Taylor’s is one of them. Founded in Keighley in 1858 and brewing at Knowle Spring since 1863\, it has remained fiercely independent and family-owned through five generations. That’s quite an achievement in itself\, but what we really love is that Taylor’s has never treated its heritage as an excuse to stand still. It has built an incredibly loyal following over the years\, grown from a Yorkshire favourite into a name recognised in pubs across the country\, and continues to invest in the brewery and\, importantly\, in cask. \nAnd this month there’s a new look to go with it. Taylor’s has unveiled its first major brand refresh in more than a decade\, with a rather lovely British racing green taking centre stage across its pump clips\, glassware and bottles. We think they’ve got the balance just right: it feels fresh and contemporary without losing any of the character that makes Taylor’s\, well\, Taylor’s. The brewery says the aim is to carry the best of its 168-year history forward – and that feels particularly fitting during Cask Ale Week. \nThere was another reason Timothy Taylor’s caught our attention this week. Writing in The Good Food Guide\, beer writer Pete Brown makes a brilliant case for cask as Britain’s “original craft beer” – fresh\, living beer that isn’t truly finished until it reaches the pub. His visit to Taylor’s gets right to the heart of why this brewery has earned such a following: an almost obsessive attention to detail and a determination to do things properly rather than simply doing what’s easiest. DESCRIPTION:What do our Ale Trailers and James Blunt have in common? Excellent taste in cask\, apparently. \nEvery year we ask our Ale Trailers to vote for their favourite beer – and every year Timothy Taylor’s Landlord comes out on top. So there really could only be one Drinkers’ Choice Beer of the Day to kick off Cask Ale Week. And this year our drinkers have some rather famous company. Singer\, songwriter\, cask ale fan and – importantly – pub owner James Blunt has picked Landlord as his Beer of the Day too. \nWhy? James tells us: “The beer is always consistent and has beautiful clarity once settled. Coming in at a sensible 4.3% ABV means enjoying a few jars is no problem at all… There would be uproar if we ever considered removing it from our pumps!” And who are we to argue? First brewed in 1953\, Landlord has gone on to become a four-time CAMRA Supreme Champion Beer of Britain and today is Britain’s number-one cask ale by both volume and value. Bright\, beautifully balanced\, fruity and citrusy with that unmistakable lingering bitter finish\, this is a pint that inspires some serious loyalty. \nAnd if your usual Landlord looks particularly snazzy this Cask Ale Week\, you haven’t had one too many. Timothy Taylor’s has just unveiled its first major brand refresh in more than a decade\, with a smart new British racing green look rolling out across pump clips\, glassware and bottles. New outfit\, same Landlord underneath – which is probably just as well\, given James has already warned us what would happen if anyone messed with it. \nOur Ale Trailers have spoken. DESCRIPTION:There can’t be many breweries where you can talk about 14th-century ale wives\, Victorian brewing brothers\, a yeast rescued from the aftermath of a wartime air raid and one of Britain’s most pioneering sustainable breweries – all without leaving the same little corner of Southwold. Welcome to Adnams\, our Brewery of the Day. \nBeer has been brewed on this site since at least 1345\, with George and Ernest Adnams arriving in Southwold and buying the Sole Bay Brewery in 1872. More than 150 years later\, Adnams is still independent\, still brewing in the heart of the town and still finding new ways to move forward. Sustainability has become a huge part of that story – from its energy-efficient brewhouse to the extraordinary grass-roofed distribution centre just outside Southwold\, which celebrated its 20th birthday this week. And while Adnams has gone on to make everything from gin and whisky to alcohol-free beer\, there’s something we particularly like about where its attention is turning right now: cask. \nIn fact\, Adnams says it sees a “great opportunity in cask” and wants to encourage more people to discover it. Its newly refreshed beer range includes rather brilliant cylindrical pump clips designed to stand out at the bar – but perhaps the best evidence of its love for cask is what the brewers have been up to for this year’s Cask Ale Week. They’ve gone back into the archives and revived Extra\, the beer crowned Champion Beer of Britain in 1993. Head Brewer Dan Gooderham tracked down former Adnams brewers\, talked to the people who remembered it and delved into old records to understand what made the original so special. They even discovered that the Fuggles selected for this year’s brew came from the same Kent grower Adnams used in the 1990s. We love that: more than 150 years of brewing history\, but still curious\, still innovating and still getting genuinely excited about putting great cask beer on the bar. SUMMARY:Beer of the Day: Adnams Ghost Ship
DESCRIPTION:Day Two and our Beer of the Day is a hauntingly good one. Award-winning beer writer Adrian Tierney-Jones has chosen Adnams Ghost Ship – and described a great pint of it with one word we particularly like: “pristine.” \nAdrian says: “Ghost Ship Pale Ale is actually a pristine pint. It’s a beer that packs great hop character. There’s a really good balance between the malt and the juicy\, fruity hoppiness\, which makes it the perfect cask beer for Cask Ale Week.” And there’s quite a story behind that pint. Ghost Ship first appeared in 2010 as a Halloween seasonal\, inspired by shipwrecks\, smugglers and tales of ghostly vessels off the Suffolk coast. Its spiritual home is The Bell at Walberswick\, Adnams’ centuries-old pub with a few ghost stories of its own. The brewers then threw a relatively new American hop called Citra into the mix – and created a monster. The first brew went down so well that Ghost Ship returned the following year\, when demand was so strong Adnams actually ran out of Citra. By 2012\, it was here to stay. \nAt 4.1%\, Ghost Ship brings lemon\, lime and elderflower from those hops\, a touch of biscuit from the malt and rye spice underneath – bright\, juicy\, refreshing and with a lovely hoppy finish. What began as a spooky seasonal experiment has become Adnams’ best-selling beer\, which suggests this is one Ghost people are very happy to see again. So take Adrian’s advice this Cask Ale Week: hunt down a pristine pint of Ghost Ship\, pull up a chair and enjoy it. Preferably in a nice old pub. Whether you choose one that’s haunted is entirely up to you.

DESCRIPTION:Nearly 200 years old\, seven generations of the same family and currently having the biggest year in its history – JW Lees is clearly not ready to start acting its age. Manchester’s oldest operating brewery has been brewing at Greengate in Middleton since 1828\, when retired cotton manufacturer John Lees decided that\, rather than putting his feet up\, he’d start a brewery. We’re rather glad he did. Almost two centuries later\, the family is still at the helm\, the beer is still being brewed at Greengate and JW Lees has grown into a brilliant part of North West pub and brewing culture. \nAnd there’s plenty to celebrate right now. JW Lees has just reported record sales of £105.6 million\, with draught beer sales up 3.7% – helped along by one particularly nostalgic comeback. Last year\, JW Lees brought Boddingtons Cask back to Manchester after a 13-year absence\, and the response has been extraordinary. By this summer it was pouring in around 400 pubs nationally and accounted for an estimated 15% of the brewery’s total production. We absolutely love that a beer with so much history can come back and find a whole new audience alongside the people who remember it first time around. And while all that nostalgia is flowing\, behind a little green door at Greengate you’ll find The Boilerhouse – JW Lees’ small-batch brewery\, where almost 200 years of brewing experience gets permission to play with new styles\, collaborations and ideas. \nThat mix of old favourites and new discoveries feels very Cask Ale Week to us. JW Lees is closing in on its 200th birthday with a growing business\, busy pubs\, a seventh generation involved in the family firm and absolutely no intention of standing still. They’re celebrating Cask Ale Week too\, including cask tasting flights at Founder’s Hall in Manchester – a sort of beer-lover’s pick ‘n’ mix and a very good excuse to discover something new. Nearly two centuries of brewing knowledge\, a brilliantly successful blast from Manchester’s beery past and cask still right at the heart of it all. Day Three’s Beer of the Day has been chosen by actor\, writer and comedian Kieran Hodgson\, best known to millions as Gordon in BBC sitcom Two Doors Down. His pick? A proper Yorkshire favourite: Farmers Blonde from Bradfield Brewery. \nAnd what a lovely pint to choose. At 4.0%\, Farmers Blonde is pale\, bright\, citrusy and packed with summery fruit aromas – the sort of wonderfully refreshing\, easy-drinking cask beer that can disappear rather quicker than you intended. It also comes with a brilliantly Yorkshire backstory. Bradfield Brewery started life on a working dairy farm in 2005\, and Farmers Blonde was named after the Blonde d’Aquitaine breed of cattle. The beer proved rather popular – today it’s Bradfield’s flagship ale\, while the brewery has gone from milking 100 cows a day to brewing more than 100\,000 pints a week. Now that’s what we call diversification. \nSo today we’re following Kieran’s lead. Find yourself a handpull with that famous blonde cow on it and order a Farmers Blonde. If you’re already a cask drinker\, there’s every chance you’ll understand why it has such a following. And if you’re just beginning to explore cask? DESCRIPTION:If you were asked to imagine the perfect home for cask ale\, you might come up with an old thatched brewery beside a river\, a mile from the Jurassic Coast\, with its own spring\, a working Victorian waterwheel and more than 230 years of brewing history. The brilliant thing is\, you don’t have to imagine it – it exists. Welcome to Palmers Brewery in Bridport\, where there has been continuous brewing on the same site since 1794. Still independent\, still family-run and now with the fifth generation of the Palmer family involved\, this is a brewery where history isn’t something hanging on the wall – it’s still very much at work. \nAnd for beer lovers\, the Old Brewery is rather special. Palmers is the UK’s only thatched brewery\, and inside you’ll still find a traditional mash tun and open copper\, while a huge waterwheel dating from 1879 remains in working order. The ales are made with water from Palmers’ own natural spring\, Maris Otter malt and whole-leaf hops\, before being cask conditioned. But this isn’t brewing preserved in aspic: modern brewing knowledge and quality control work alongside all that wonderful old kit. Palmers is particularly serious about what happens between brewery and glass too\, investing in cellar training\, storage and transport to make sure its cask reaches the drinker as it should. Cask Marque has apparently described them as “obsessive” about quality. We suspect Palmers took that as a compliment. \nAnd more than 230 years after the first brew\, the place is still full of life. Palmers now has 53 pubs across the West Country\, as well as supplying free houses\, and this September its Beer Festival returns to the historic brewery itself\, raising money for the Palmers Brewery Community Fund. We love the whole picture: a fiercely independent family brewery\, beautiful pubs\, a waterwheel that has been turning since Queen Victoria was on the throne and live cask ale still being brewed on the site where the story began.
