SUMMARY:Arkell's Brewery
DESCRIPTION:Our 10th Brewery of the Day for National Cask Ale Week 2024 is Arkell’s Brewery.\n\n\n\n Arkells Brewery‘s beer is still brewed in much the same way as it was when John Arkell first made it in 1843 and the brewery buildings seem untouched by the passing years. If you speak to any of the staff about the company it is clear that everyone is still as fiercely proud of its local and family roots as John Arkell was himself.\n\n\n\nBut Arkell’s has not achieved its unique position as Swindon’s oldest company and one of the oldest traditional breweries still operating in Britain today\, simply by standing still.\n\n\n\nThe company has remained true to the principles of loyalty\, quality and tradition set down by its founder 180 years ago\, but it has also adapted brilliantly to the changing world around it. Some things never change at Arkell’s\, but it is the ability to change effectively when change is necessary that has been at the cornerstone of the brewery’s success story over the last 180 years.

SUMMARY:Palmer's Brewery
DESCRIPTION:Our 7th Brewery of the Day for National Cask Ale Week 2024 is Palmers Brewery.\n\n\n\nPalmers Brewery‘s ales are brewed in one of Britain’s oldest and prettiest breweries and have been since 1794. The only thatched brewery in the UK\, Palmers sits adjacent to the river Brit just a mile from Dorset’s Jurassic Coast. All their fine ales are brewed using water from their own naturally rising spring.\n\n\n\nTheir Head Brewer uses only the finest Maris Otter malt and carefully selected whole leaf hops to produce ales in a way they have been made for generations. The Palmers historic brewhouse has a traditional mash tun\, an open top copper\, along with top fermentation\, this is the way ale should be brewed.\n\n\n\nThis year\, Palmers Brewery celebrated 230 years of brewing in Bridport. They launched their 230th Anniversary ale to coincide with Cask Ale Week 2024. Their 230th Anniversary Ale Trail can be found on CaskFinder.

The company today is still controlled and managed by members of the original family guided by the same brewing ethos which has been forever their quality hallmark. Theakston cask beers are available and enjoyed throughout the UK and include a range of award-winning ales of which Theakston Old Peculier\, Theakston Best and Theakston Lightfoot are best known. \nRecent developments however include the runaway success launch of a new lower strength cask ale\, Theakston Quencher\, a light amber beer brewed especially to taste fulsome and rounded at the lower ABV\, meeting a growing demand for this style of beer. More newly developed cask ales are in the pipeline for next year including the roll out of the exciting Theakston Peculier IPA\, equally successfully trialled earlier this summer. \nA combination of quality and innovation has driven a 10% growth in Theakston cask ales this year alone\, underpinning the company’s confidence in the future of cask beer and the growing demand for their own range’

SUMMARY:Theakston Brewery
DESCRIPTION:Theakson Brewery has been chosen for today’s ‘Brewery of the Day’. \nTheakston is one of Britain’s oldest established family brewing companies and is famed throughout the country and overseas for its wide range of premium ales brewed in our historic Victorian tower brewery.  Their legendary Old Peculier beer is sold in many countries overseas and is widely admired as a world iconic beer. \nLocated in the Yorkshire Dales market town of Masham\, North Yorkshire and controlled and run by fifth generation\, direct family descendants of the founder\, Robert Theakston. They use Robert’s passion for quality ingredients and brewing as the guiding ethos that has ensured their company’s place at the pinnacle of the brewer’s art today. \nHaving an amazing history encompassing everything from world wars\, economic highs and lows\, takeovers and buy-backs throughout nearly two centuries of brewing\, today\, Theakston remain at the forefront of the craft beer revival with customers all over the UK. We play an active role in supporting arts\, sport and the local environment both in North Yorkshire and further afield. \nCooperage\nTheakston have employed coopers since the founding of the company in 1827 and today\, Theakston Old Peculier in hand crafted oak casks is regularly ordered by licensees and made available to them across the north of the country. Theakston are very proud of their coopering tradition and to be able to continue the history of coopering\, being one of the last remaining breweries in the UK to still have an in-house cooperage. \nFor many hundreds of years before metal casks were invented\, wooden casks were the only means by which not just liquids but also foodstuffs were transported\, not least within the brewing industry. But such has been the success of the introduction of the metal version that very few brewers today still retain a cooper. The reason for this is that to make an oak cask of precise content from non-standard widths of oak is a true craft which cannot be replicated by machine. The manufacture of metal casks contrastingly is an automated process.  Find out more here. \nFind out more by visiting Theakston’s website\, here.\nBook a brewery tour here.\nVisit their shop here.

SUMMARY:Greene King
DESCRIPTION:Greene King has been crafting quality beers from its historic breweries in Bury St Edmunds and Dunbar for over 200 years. \nThe Westgate brewery\, in Bury St Edmunds\, has been the home of Greene King since 1799 and its leading cask ales are brewed here\, including Greene King IPA\, Old Speckled Hen and Abbot Ale\, as well as a broad range of seasonal and speciality beers. \nThe Belhaven Brewery is nestled in Dunbar on the beautiful East Lothian coast. As Scotland’s oldest working brewery\, established in 1719\, Belhaven brews several nation favourites\, including Belhaven 80 Shilling. \nPermanent Cask Ale Brands:\n• Abbot Ale is a 5% ABV traditional cask ale with a brewing process that has hardly changed over hundreds of years. Brewed for longer\, the ale has masses of fruit character\, malty richness\, and a superb hop balance. At this year’s Great British Beer Festival Abbot Ale was awarded silver in the Champion Beer of Britain Award and gold in the Premium Bitter category.\n• Greene King IPA\, 3.4% ABV\, is the brewery’s flagship beer. First brewed in Bury St Edmunds over 90 years ago\, this is an easy drinking\, session cask ale with a hoppy taste and aroma making it clean\, crisp and moreish.\n•  Old Speckled Hen\, 4.5% ABV\, is a British ale that was first brewed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the MG car factory in Abingdon\, Oxfordshire. The premium cask ale continues to be a finely balanced beer with a distinctive rich\, malty taste and fruity aroma. Old Speckled Hen is also the only traditional premium ale to be supported by national TV advertising.\n• The Hen family also offers another permanent cask favourite\, Old Golden Hen (4.1% ABV)\, a light golden ale that delivers both flavour and refreshment.\n• Belhaven 80 Shilling is a 3.9% rich Scottish ale with a classic red appearance with notes of toffee and soft fruit flavours. \nSeasonal Calendar\nThis year\, the Suffolk brewer launched its Fresh Cask Releases calendar\, a portfolio of 18 different cask beers\, available at specific times of the year. The calendar has been filled with a combination of returning favourites\, key calendar creations linked to sporting occasions and national celebrations\, collaborations\, and new ales\, inspired by legendary stories of the people and places associated with beer. \nFor September and October\, Fresh Legs\, a golden 4% ale will be available to celebrate the Rugby World Cup and offer the perfect pint to enjoy while watching the sport. Making its return\, Bonkers Conkers\, brewed with over five different hop varieties will also be available with a refreshed pump clip for September only. \nThe launch of Cask Pins\nIn July this year Greene King launched the 4.5-gallon pin to market\, meaning pubs will have the opportunity to manage a lower throughput at quieter times. The seven-figure investment means that by offering a smaller unit for operators\, cask can have its rightful place on the bar even at quieter drinking periods or even provide an opportunity to expand current range. \nProud to Pitch In\nGreene King IPA launched its funding initiative two years ago\, where a portion of sales of the beer are utilised to fund grassroot and community clubs around the UK. Clubs can apply for up to £4\,000 for much-needed support to enable then to continue to play the sports they love. So far\, Proud to Pitch In has granted over £500\,000 to over 200 clubs\, with the ambition to give away £1 million. \nCask Iron Guarantee\nThe brewer continues to support its free trade customers with the Cask Iron Guarantee\, where customers with Greene King cask ales can receive a refund for un-broached\, and credit for remaining volume on broached casks\, for out-of-date cask. Terms and conditions apply\, customers should contact their Greene King sales representative for full details. \nVisit the Greene King website – www.greeneking.co.uk\nVisit the Belhaven website – www.belhaven.co.uk
